JIEDDO Modeling and Analysis of the IED Threat

The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) continues to be the single greatest threat to American forces in the Global War on Terrorism. In support of the Joint IED Defeat Organization (JIEDDO), the C4I Center of George Mason University conducts research on modeling, analyzing, predicting, and developing counter-measures to the IED threat.

Specific research objectives include:

  • Statistical analyses of interactions between coalition forces and IED emplacement;
  • Value Models of IED threat groups;
  • Causal Models relating coalition force behavior, threat behavior, and the environment;
  • Social Complexity, agent-based modeling of the IED phenomena.

Dr. Kathryn Laskey is the Principal Investigator (PI). Drs. Ken Hintz and Andy Loerch are Co-PIs. Mr. Fred Woodaman is the project manager. Other Mason faculty include Drs. Tod Levitt and Maksim Tsvetovat. The George Mason team is aided in this effort by Dr. Peter Kolesar, Professor Emeritus of the Columbia Business School. Collaborating with the Mason team is a research team from Howard University led by Dr. Ronald Leach.
