Modeling and Simulation
Modeling and Simulation have gained a new importance in the post cold-war era.
New technologies allow linkage among constructive "wargaming",
instrumented ranges, virtual "see the battlefield" simulation, statistical
analyses of interactions, and value, causal and agent-based models.
At the same time forces are becoming smaller, more dispersed, and more mobile,
requiring extensive training and a new C4I capability for mission rehearsal.
Modeling and Simulation will fill these needs as well as reducing cost and
uncertainty in acquisition of new combat systems.
Specific current projects in this area include:
- Joint Battle Management Language JBML (presentation)
- Geospatial Battle Management Language GeoBML
(presentation),
(paper)
- Joint IED Defeat Organization (JIEDDO)
Previous projects
- Extensible Battle Management Language XBML
(paper)
- Air Operations BML AOBML (presentation)
- Cross-Network Overlay Multicasting XOM
Direct contract support received from:
- the Defense Modeling and Simulation Office (DMSO)
Area coordinator for Modeling and Simulation is Dr. Mike Hieb. Faculty working in this area include
Dr. Kathryn Laskey, Dr. Ken Hintz, Dr. Andy Loerch, Mr. Fred Woodaman, Dr. Tod Levitt, Maksim Tsvetovat,
and Dr. Peter Kolesar.
