Situational Awareness Geospatially Enabled (SAGE)
Scott Carey and Michael Rainey

Nguyen Engineering building, Room 4705
ABSTRACT
Without the production of tailored terrain and weather based knowledge products, military small unit
leaders experience a significantly degraded capability to apply judgment throughout all phases of the
planning process resulting in an underdeveloped understanding of their operational situation with
respect to terrain and weather. The fundamental objective of the SAGE effort is to provide that
understanding of the impact of terrain and weather on specific missions to small units. SAGE employs
underlying terrain data in conjunction with user input to execute automated processes capable of
processing large amounts of terrain data in a rapid, consistent, and standardized manner to produce
terrain based knowledge products (SAGE Tactical Decision Aids) for the leader. With access to high
quality terrain based knowledge products in significantly less time, leaders are able to shift
intellectual capital from the processing of terrain data and analysis of terrain information to applying
judgment to SAGE tactical decision aids (knowledge products) in order to create a greater understanding
of mission impacts that results in clear, concise, executable plans.
